Helping Flood Victims in Lamont

On Sunday, June 1, a group of 13 from the Marengo area headed up to Lamont, Iowa to help clean up after the flash flood damage they sustained a week before.  The town got over 8 inches of rain in about 2 hours and the run-off from surrounding fields swamped the town in.

Our group worked at a woman’s house clearing out her backyard that had been under over 5 feet of water.  It was covered in about half a foot deep layer of cornstalks and mud.  We made some progress, but the clean-up will continue to take time for the people of Lamont.

While Parkersburg suffered a force-five tornado, Lamont suffered a stalled thunderstorm system that dropped seven inches of rain in one hour, and effectively flooded all of the basements of the city, and certain first floors.

Ok, so if you moved into a house and didn’t know it was on a flood plain, let’s pay your loss and MOVE you away from the flood plain. It is foolish to continue doing the same thing in same circumstances and expect different results.
